Feeding South Dakota needed a distinct logo and branding to commemorate its 50th anniversary—something memorable that honored five decades of fighting hunger while standing out from its existing identity.

The challenge was to develop a logo and branding approach that:
Clearly communicated the 50-year milestone.
Maintained strong brand recognition.
Included visual references to hunger and hunger relief.
Stood out from FSD’s existing branding with a unique but cohesive design.
Incorporated gold to reflect the traditional 50th anniversary gift.
Aligned with specific messaging and tone guidelines—avoiding celebratory language in favor of more reflective terminology.

The finalized logo uses metallic gold typography to symbolize the 50th anniversary's traditional color. The “0” in “50” creatively doubles as a plate, with a fork and spoon formed from negative space—subtly referencing the organization’s decades-long mission to fight hunger.
The phrase “50 years of Feeding South Dakota” provides clear brand recognition while playing on the organization’s name and purpose. To ensure visual consistency throughout the anniversary year, a pared-down color palette was developed: gold as the dominant color, complemented by bright orange, light tan, and dark black accent tones. This allows the logo to remain the primary visual focus.
Messaging guidelines were also developed to maintain a respectful and mission-aligned tone. Words like “commemorate,” “observe,” and “honor” are preferred over “celebrate,” and phrases such as “50 years of fighting hunger” and “50 years of dedication to the mission” help reinforce the organization’s purpose.
